Museo dei Bozzetti "Pierluigi Gherardi" - Città di Pietrasanta

 
Dal 1948 al '52 frequenta il Maryland Institute of Art e grazie alla "Guggenheim Traveling Fellowship" nel 1957 si reca a Firenze, dove apprende l'arte dei grandi maestri di disegno e di prospettiva, con attenzione alla scultura classica. Perfeziona la sua formazione andando a lezione da Jacques Maroger, capo dei restauratori del Louvre di Parigi. Sempre nel 1957 partecipa alla collettiva "Artistes Indépandant de l'Eure" a Evreux, Francia, e presenta una personale alla Galleria Spinetti di Firenze.
Dal 1962 al '76 insegna pittura e anatomia presso il Maryland Institute College of Art di Baltimora. é autore di numerose pubblicazioni, tra le quali "Learning from the Masters", "Anatomy", "Drawing the Female Body", "Drawing the Male Figure", "Drawing the Living Figure", "Bringing Textures to Life", "The work of Joseph Sheppard", "Realistic Figure Drawing", "Joseph Sheppard, Sculptor" "Joseph Sheppard, Portraits" che vengono tradotte in molte lingue.
é membro della "Allied Artists of America", del "Knickerbocker Artists", della "Society of Animal Artists" e della "National Sculpture Society". Partecipa a numerose rassegne fra cui: "Three Realists", I.F.A. Galleries, Washington, D.C. In Versilia dal 1984, realizza le proprie opere presso le Fonderie Tommasi, Del Chiaro, Mariani; i Laboratori Franco Cervietti e Pasquino Pasquini. Abita in una villa a Valdicastello, ristrutturata dalla moglie Rita Saintclair, arredatrice d'interni.
